Growing up in Northern California where his father practiced as a physician, young Bob spent hours tinkering with mechanical and electronic devices. He also developed an interest in aviation and earned his pilot’s license at a young age. Bob graduated from college with a degree in physics and decided on medical school out of admiration for his father’s skills. After earning his medical degree, he pursued a residency in ophthalmology because this field of medicine utilized the most physics. After practicing in Western Washington for 6 years, Dr. Ford co-founded Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute. In addition to participating in clinical studies of the excimer laser, he has made many innovations in cataract surgery and laser vision correction. Dr. Ford’s special interests include laser technology, computer programming, hiking, gardening and flying. He has a daughter and son—Laura and Marshall. A superb teacher, Dr. Ford enjoys sharing his knowledge and supporting numerous charitable endeavors. People enjoy being around his positive, upbeat and easy-going personality. Born in Soonchun, South Korea, Paul grew up in San Jose, California where his father was a minister. As a popular, outstanding student, Paul was involved in many school activities and developed early leadership skills, as well as a passion for tennis. Graduating from college with a biochemistry major, Paul attended medical school. After earning his medical degree, Dr. Chung took an ophthalmology residency and then went on to complete subspecialty training in glaucoma. For 3 years, Dr. Chung served as chief of ophthalmology at the VA Hospital in Loma Linda, California. Then, he further honed his surgical skills at busy eye centers in Georgia and Tennessee. Dr. Chung likes to read, hike, play tennis and spend time with his family. He and his wife Iris, a family practice physician, have 4 sons and a daughter—Jared, Jason, Joelle, Joseph and Justin. Dr. Chung enjoys interacting with people in his quiet way and keeping things light with a touch of humor. Born in southern California, Rochelle entered the world while both of her parents were completing their ophthalmology training at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Rochelle and her older brother grew up in a home where medical conversations were common. During medical school, Rochelle planned to pursue general surgery. But a few days into her ophthalmology rotation, she was able to answer all of the attending surgeon’s questions and realized ophthalmology was a natural fit. Being detail-oriented, she was drawn to the precision of microsurgery and inspired by the many ways it can help people’s vision. Away from work, Dr. Cochrane enjoys exploring the great outdoors, observing wildlife, snowboarding, cycling, surfing, scuba diving, landscape photography, and hanging out with Pipsqueak, her rescue cat. Originally from Central California, Jason grew up in the small, rural community of Colville, Washington where his father practiced dentistry. Although Jason enjoyed living on forest land close to recreational activities, music was his real passion and consumed most of his spare time. Graduating from university with a biology major, Jason’s strong desire to help people led him into medical school. After earning his medical degree, Dr. Leng completed an ophthalmology residency because it fit his personality—he likes computers, electronics, lasers and paying close attention to small details. Earning a reputation for precision, he taught cataract surgery skills to ophthalmology residents in Loma Linda, California before joining Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute. A gifted violinist, pianist, performing artist and recording engineer, Dr. Leng also enjoys photography, filmmaking, flying, culinary arts, skiing and hiking. He resides in Chehalis, Washington. An avid outdoorsman, Bill climbed 16 of Colorado’s highest peaks while a teenager. Graduating from college with a major in chemistry, Bill went on to take medicine. After earning his medical degree, Dr. Gruzensky practiced several years in Alaska and Ethiopia. Going back to school, he took a residency in ophthalmology and completed specialty training in cornea and external eye disease. For 4 years, Dr. Gruzensky taught ophthalmology residents the skills of eye surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, one of the nation’s premier medical schools. An outdoor adventurer, Dr. Gruzensky enjoys skiing, backpacking, mountain climbing, dog sledding and flying. He and his wife Trish, a learning center teacher, have two daughters—Heidi and Michaela. A native of Scranton, Pennsylvania, where his father practiced as an ophthalmologist, Jim grew up in this old coal mining town playing basketball every moment he could squeeze into the day. Jim graduated from college with a degree in biology and then pursued medicine. After earning his medical degree, he completed a residency in ophthalmology and went on to specialize in cornea and external disease. For 7 years, Dr. Guzek was chief of ophthalmology at the VA Hospital in Loma Linda, California. He also practiced 3 years in Saudi Arabia and 6 years as a medical missionary in Sri Lanka and West Africa. Dr. Guzek enjoys relaxing with a good book, bicycling, hiking and listening to classical music. He and his wife Roberta, a nurse, have 2 sons and twin daughters—James, Joseph, Leah and Rachel. There is little Dr. Guzek has not encountered in his broad scope of experience. A native of Seattle, Washington, Brian grew up enjoying the outdoor activities of the Northwest. His father, an ophthalmologist, helped establish the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. At university, Brian majored in cell biology and then pursued medicine. Earning his medical degree, Dr. Carey went on to complete an ophthalmology residency. In addition to cataract surgery, he was fortunate to perform a large number of refractive surgeries and learn valuable techniques from some of the profession’s pioneers. After practicing with his brother in Seattle and then briefly in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Carey returned to Seattle, where he expanded his surgical skills. Besides performing surgery, he enjoys serving as a team ophthalmologist for the Seattle Seahawks. Dr. Carey’s interests are tennis, golf, scuba diving and snow skiing. He and his wife Vicki, a residential realtor, have a daughter and twin sons—Barbara Ann, Thomas and Joseph. Born in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, Bryan grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where his father worked as a chemist. Throughout his schooling, Bryan was active in sports and music—competitive swimming, rowing crew, band and symphony. Graduating university with a degree in biological sciences, Bryan joined the Peace Corps in the South Pacific where he taught school for two years. After earning his medical degree, Dr. Edgington completed an ophthalmology residency and went on to finish a corneal fellowship. For six years, he taught ophthalmology residents the skills of cataract, corneal and refractive surgery at The George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. Then he served as director of cornea service at the VA Medical Center in Portland Oregon and as associate professor of cornea service at Casey Eye Institute at Oregon Health and Science University. Dr. Edgington’s interests include skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, travel and exploring. He and his wife Tara, who has an MBA in international business, have a son—Anton. He grew up on their small farm helping with a big vegetable garden every summer, climbing trees and playing in the lime pits nearby. Then, he went on to earn his medical degree and complete a residency in ophthalmology. For 10 years, Dr. Gano practiced with Kaiser Permanente in Southern California, where he performed a considerable number of cataract surgeries before joining Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute. In addition to singing and playing guitar, Dr. Gano is an amateur juggler and likes to water ski, swim and scuba dive. He and his wife, Angela, a nurse, have two sons—Alexander and Donovan. Originally from California, Joyce grew up in Wisconsin and Michigan where her father practiced as an anesthesiologist. She took piano lessons for years but was more interested in the medical focus that was familiar in her home. Graduating from university with a religion major due to her fascination with the mind-body connection, Joyce went on to earn her medical degree. Finishing a residency in ophthalmology, Dr. Choe then completed specialty training in glaucoma. While working with several private clinics, she served as a cataract surgeon and glaucoma specialist at the VA Hospital in Loma Linda, California for 7 years. Dr. Choe enjoys being outdoors, hiking, visiting other cultures, learning about healthy lifestyles and providing surgical care on medical missions. She resides in Vancouver, Washington. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, the son of missionary parents, Loren spent his early years in Indonesia and New Guinea. When his family returned to Texas, he grew up in the small town of Keene, enjoying time spent outdoors and water skiing in the hot summers. In university, Loren majored in biology. He also earned his pilot’s license and spent a year in India as a student missionary. After medical school and ophthalmology residency training, Dr. Seery went on to complete a fellowship in cornea and external eye disease. For the next four years, Dr. Seery practiced on the island of Guam, performing cataract surgery and treating a wide variety of eye problems. In addition to eye missions, Dr. Seery’s interests include long-distance cycling, snorkeling and scuba diving, hiking, flying, church activities, prison ministry, and playing violin. He and his wife Karen, who has a master’s degree in elementary education, have a daughter and son—Ashlyn and Bryan. As a youngster, Marshall spent a lot of time building devices and taking things apart to discover how they worked. At age 16, he earned his private pilot’s license. Graduating from university with a degree in mechanical engineering, Marshall continued his studies in medical school. After earning his medical degree, Dr. Ford completed an ophthalmology residency and went on to pursue specialty training in cornea and refractive surgery. Dr. Ford enjoys time with his family, fitness training, computers, flying and off-road motorcycling. He and his wife Kelly, a veterinarian, make their home in Chehalis, Washington. They have two daughters—Lucy and Maile. Unassuming, steady and focused, Dr. Ford’s goal is to continually advance the outcomes of surgery, doing whatever he can to improve results and make them more predictable. “Vision is so important to our quality of life.     Kind and approachable, Dr. Yoon has a cheerful and fun-loving personality. Passionate about helping people see, he enjoys the intricacies of eye surgery. Born in Glendale, California, Eden grew up nearby in San Gabriel. He loved playing basketball and dreamed of becoming a doctor. In college, Eden tutored biology and chemistry students, spent a year studying in Spain, and graduated with a major in Spanish. Before medical school, he mentored abused mothers and their children at a shelter in Peru. He also had the opportunity to observe eye surgery at Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute. Seeing how happy patients were with their new vision was a crucial factor in his decision to pursue ophthalmology specialty training. In his last year, Dr. Yoon was able to spend a month doing cataract surgery in Zambia, Africa with a veteran eye surgeon learning how to restore vision without modern instruments. Joining a private clinic in Vancouver, Washington, Dr. Yoon focused on comprehensive ophthalmology and cataract surgery. He and his wife, Brinja, a dental hygienist, have a daughter and son—Tealyn and Tayte. Caring and committed, Dr. Yoon wants to help disadvantaged people in the world be able to see. “I feel like I have received so much, and volunteering is a way for me to give back.”

Fascinated by the visual system’s intricate design, Dr. Rondón enjoys the microscopic precision of surgery. Born in Manhattan, Oswald grew up in New York until age 13. Then his family moved to the Dominican Republic for three years before returning to Florida. In college, Oswald majored in biology. Since childhood, he’d been interested in becoming a physician but wasn’t thrilled with the potential of long work hours away from family. Then Oswald met an eye surgeon at a school function. When he learned how much the doctor enjoyed his job, and that it didn’t involve a 100+ hour work week, he decided to pursue ophthalmology. After medical school and ophthalmology residency, Dr. Rondón went on to complete specialty training in glaucoma. Away from work, Dr. Rondón likes baseball and basketball, mountain biking, Bible study, and spending time with family. His wife, Betty, home schools their son, Amedeo, and daughter, Amadis. Dr. Rondón feels that God has led him into ophthalmology. “I get to positively impact people’s lives and help them see better.”

    Friendly, kind, and deeply caring, Dr. Seward enjoys meeting patients, answering their questions, and helping them feel comfortable. He loves the opportunity to restore people’s vision through surgery. Born in New Jersey, Michael grew up in a close-knit family of six in the small town of Fletcher, North Carolina. At the age of 7, he decided he wanted to be a doctor because of a quaint nearby Christian hospital where his siblings were born. Michael discovered his passion for eyecare during medical school while on a one-month rotation with Mercy Ships in Africa. “I spent time observing cataract and eye muscle surgeries. From the very first day, I knew I needed to do that,” he says. Dr. Seward completed his ophthalmology training in Kentucky and Texas. Over the next two decades, he took extended periods away from private practice in Michigan to provide vision care and surgery for underserved populations—three years in Zambia, Africa, and four years in Papua New Guinea. He and his wife, Jannike, who holds a Ph.D. in special education, now reside in Anchorage, Alaska. “I love fixing things in general, and I particularly love restoring vision,” Dr. Seward says. “I want my patients to know they’re in the hands of somebody who really cares about them.”
