Social Implications
Beyond its physical effects, rosacea causes significant emotional and social damage because of its impact on personal appearance. In recent surveys by the National Rosacea Society, rosacea sufferers reported the following:
  • 41% have avoided public contact or canceled social engagements
  • 30% have missed work because of their condition
  • 68% reported low self esteem
  • 58% reported embarrassment
  • 43% reported a negative outlook on life
  • 63% have trouble establishing new relationships
  • 58% have overheard rude comments
  • 54% experience inhibited social lives
Adding to the embarrassment is a common myth that rosacea sufferers with a red face and nose are alcoholics. While alcohol may aggravate rosacea, the symptoms can be just as severe in non-drinkers. Another misconception is that rosacea is caused by poor hygiene, while in truth this disorder is unrelated to personal cleanliness.
Skin treatment with oral antibiotics, diet changes, topical creams (metronidazole), and cosmetic surgery led 73% of respondents to say their emotional well being improved. And 71% said their social lives improved.
