Side Effects and Risks

Potential Side Effects

Even though PRK is a relatively safe procedure the following side effects during the healing process are possible: 

  • Halo effect
  • Corneal haziness
  • Light sensitivity
  • Fluctuating vision
  • Initial overcorrection  (temporary farsightedness)

Risk Factors

As with any surgery, there are risks of complications including:

  • Infection
  • Undercorrection or overcorrection
  • Delayed healing of the epithelium (layer of protective surface cells)
  • Inability to tolerate contact lenses
